GEN Z - CHANGE MAKERS
By Franki Norfolk Ainsworth.
Gen Z - some people hate them others love them. In this article I explore why I think they're great.
What is a Gen Z you may be wondering? Well, a Gen Z is a person from the age of 10-25, born after 1997. In my opinion, Gen Z is the generation who are mainly responsible for some of the biggest recent changes in this world. But the real question is why does this generation deserve attention?
Raised awareness
For once the internet can be praised! Research shows that due to social media this generation is more open with talking about mental health (Very Well Media, 2022.) With every young person having access to the internet anyone can find anything they want and find people to learn from about mental health and get advice from. Before the internet you had to read books or the newspaper to find information out and lots of this information was controlled by the government; they could decide what was allowed to be shown even in the media. Now, with people being able to hide behind a ‘mask’ online, people can share anything and it can’t be covered up. This means more thoughts, feelings, and information are available to read and this allows more people to be heard on issues such as mental health. This helps Gen Z be more informed and more able to be supportive, because information equals knowledge, and knowledge means we can look after ourselves and others more effectively.
Children of change
Another reason this generation is so open to change is because we were born during the era of change. The time when major changes started to take place such as the first homosexual marriage in the UK which happened in 2014. Lots of you witnessed or have learnt about some of the awful history of this world. You know what happened before, and what you do not want to happen again. This could be one of the reasons why this generation represents the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in history.
Focus on values and ethics not fame and fortune
This generation has achieved a great deal. There is definitely less focus on fame and fortune and more on ethics and values. We have a better understanding of our LGBTQ+ community; a better understanding of our environment and what needs to be done to save the planet; more awareness of how we can make a difference to others through technology.
